Tips for Containing and Treating Onychomycosis (Nail Fungus) Naturally

If you've developed a fungal infection (onychomycosis) on your toenail, you may want to try treating it naturally before you head to a specialist for a drug-based treatment. The following tips can help you stop the infection from spreading and may even remove it completely.

Stop Your Infection from Spreading

Your first step should be to contain the infection. The following general foot care should prevent your fungal infection from getting any worse:

  1. Allow your feet to breathe by wearing cotton socks and well-fitted shoes made of natural materials.

  1. Try to keep your feet clean and dry. Fungal infections thrive in enclosed, dark, wet areas like shoes.

  1. Keep your toenails short. Avoid spreading the infection to other nails by using separate nail clippers for your infected nails.

  1. In order to prevent the spread of the infection to others, use separate towels and don't share socks. Wash towels and socks after each use.

  1. Avoid spreading your infection in public places. Wear a latex sock if you go swimming or use public showers at the gym.

  1. Avoid old shoes as they may be the source of your infection.

Fight It from the inside Using These Two Solutions

Boosting your immune system and removing yeast and candida from your body will help it to fight the fungal infection from the inside.

  1. Take Olive Leaf Extract supplements daily. This extract has potent antimicrobial properties that can help to eliminate yeast within the body as well as boosting your immune system.

  1. Add fermented foods like yoghurts and cultured vegetables like sauerkraut to your diet. In addition, take a probiotic supplement to speed up the healthy bacteria growth in your body.

Fight It from the outside Using These Two Solutions

In addition to fighting the infection from the inside, you can step up the attack with the following topical solutions:

  1. Oregano Oil has high antibacterial and antifungal properties making it useful in the treatment of Onychomycosis. Apply three drops of oil to your infected nails four times a day.

  1. Tea Tree Oil is another excellent treatment due to its antifungal properties. Add this to the Oregano Oil to boost its fungus-fighting effects. Apply two drops to your affected nails four times a day.

Be consistent with the use of both oils and carry on until the infection has cleared.

If you have no luck with the above natural treatments, you should speak to your podiatrist about medication. They may recommend drug therapy or a course of cold laser treatment sessions.
